Paul Skenes being named the Starter for the National League in the All-Star game
This has to be the fastest that someone went from the MLB Draft to make it to an All-Star team the following season in about a year. Even Stephen Strasburg wasn't that quick. Granted, he missed most of the 2011 due to injury. Also, Strasburg came into the 2010 season in June so it would have been a little late to get consideration for the All-Star game. Even Bryce Harper spent parts of three seasons in the minors though he became an All-Star at 19. Speaking of Harper, he's in his eighth All-Star game. Nearly 40 players are playing in the mid-summer classic. I'm mixed with this. In one hand, you want to see the same players playing in the All-Star game over and over like a Harper or a Judge or a Freeman. On the other hand, it is nice to see new blood because Harper and Judge aren't going to play forever and those new guys are going to be the future. At least we hope they're the future. Sadly, we've seen players who started out strong and later fate away due to injury, struggles, or stupidity and no I don't want to talk about Wander Franco other than how stupid he was. Anyway, one of the 39 new All-Stars is Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Paul Skenes who seems to be living the life. The number one overall pick in 2023 who signed for nine million dollars entered the league in less than a year in the minors, and is an All-Star after going 6-0 in 11 starts with an ERA of 1.90. In his second start in Wrigley Field, threw six hitless innings and struck out 11 Cubs. In his last start before the All-Star Game, he threw for seven hitless innings and again struck out 11 batters against the Brewers. Their was a debate after he was selected to the All-Star team if he should be the starter against Chris Sale who returned to the form that made him one of the best pitchers in the league some years ago and a candidate of Comeback Player of the Year and Ranger Suarez who having a career year. I know Mike Wilbon of PTI was against this probably because Sale and Suarez have pitched since the beginning of the season and Skenes started the season in the minors or he's a bitter Cubs fan. Honestly, I could care less. If the NL Manager wants Skenes to start then he should start Skenes. I would pick Sale since he's from Lakeland. However, the path was cleared because Sale started a game Sunday (winning his 13th game) which prevented him from playing in the game and Suarez will miss the game due to injury, so it was Skenes to start in the All-Star game. Should I mention he's dating Olivia "Livvy" Dunne, LSU gymnast, social media star, and probably one of the first NCAA athletes to make millions off of NIL money. Not to mention, he won the College World Series with the LSU Tigers. Not bad for a guy who started his college career in the Air Force Academy. That's right, he started his college career in a military academy. You want think he would be commissioned and assigned to an Air Force Base not in the big leagues if he stayed in the Air Force Academy. He was able to transfer from the AFA to LSU. I wonder how that worked. I wished it didn't because the team LSU faced off against in the 2023 College World Series was the Florida Gators. Oh well. Also, there's talk that Skenes could be in contention for the Cy Young which is the award for the best pitcher in a season. I believe he can though it depends how he does in the second half of the season and him needing to stay healthy as well. Also, depends how Suarez and Sale pitch in the second half as well as well as their health. Sale so far has 13 wins. Also, I'm sure team performance is going to play a role in it. Either way, Skenes had a great start to his Major League career.
An update: He threw for a scoreless inning in the first including getting Judge out.
