End of Eras

No, I'm talking about Taylor Swift's Eras tour, that's will last nearly another year. It's been a heck of a few days for football fans as Alabama head coach Nick Saban retired and New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick and Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll parted with their teams possibly firing them though Carroll will be an advisor or something. I know Carroll's resume isn't as impressive as Saban's and Belichick's but he is one of three head coaches to win championships in College Football and the NFL and it would have been two each if he hadn't called a pass play in the goal-line which resulted in an interception against his old team the Patriots. Run the Ball or do a bootleg play. Also, USC lost the 2004 title because the NCAA stripped them because of Reggie Bush's family accepted money from an agent. Would have been two titles stripped but Texas beat USC in the 2006 Rose Bowl. He went 97-19 in USC and 170-120-1 in the NFL, 137-89-1 in Seattle. Honestly, I thought he should have gotten one more year after going 9-8 in back-to-back seasons the past two years. Not great but not bad either. Belichick deserved his removal a little more after being out of the playoffs three times in the past four seasons. That's not good, no matter how many Super Bowls you win. Belichick has been in New England since 2000 when he replaced Pete Carroll and there were hoops that Belichick and the Patriots had to jump to make that happen. Why? Bill Parcells retired from the New York Jets after the 1999 season and just picked Belichick as his successor probably to get him not to coach the Patriots. Well, Belichick didn't want to coach the Jets, in hindsight, it was a good decision. Have you seen the Jets play from 2000 on? OK they did have good seasons in 2010 and 2011 but that's about it. Ultimately, the Jets and Patriots worked out a deal for the Patriots to have Belichick. He went 266-121 with the Patriots winning six Super Bowls and playing in three more. I know there's going to be a debate if the Patriots' success was on Belichick or a certain quarterback named Tom Brady. I'll give the Patriots this, they would able to plug players in and out besides Tom Brady of course to have consistent success for 20 years. However, when Brady left. The Patriots went down in 2020 going 7-9 with Cam Newton who was well not the same after 2015 and Brady won the Super Bowl with the Buccaneers and the first season outside of New England. Funny that the two quarterbacks who replaced Tom Brady were first-overall picks. It seemed that the Patriots were back on track when first-round pick Mac Jones took over for Newton and led the team to a 10-7 record and back to the playoffs where got their asses beat by the Buffalo Bills in Buffalo. Then for whatever reason Belichick got Matt Patricia and Joe Judge to run the offense and well the Patriots haven't recovered since. Mac Jones went from a Pro Bowler in his rookie year to benched in year three, that's bad. Also, there's a chance Belichick might coach elsewhere. The same might not be said about his former assistant Nick Saban. Alabama was a program down in the dumps before Saban got there and by the second season, they were contenders. Then in 2009, they became the National Champions. He would won five more national Championships in Alabama tying Bryant himself at Bama however, Saban has one more championship than Bryant when Saban coached the 2003 LSU to a co-national Championship with Carroll's USC team. It seems those three guys were connected with each other. Saban's 2008-2023 Bama teams were in the top 12 every year only matched by Bobby Bowden's 1987-2000 Florida State teams. Like Carroll, I was surprised to see Saban left but he wasn't getting any younger and maybe some of it was the current state of College Football/Sports with the transfer and NIL money flying around. As of now (January 12th), two of those spots are now filled by Kalen Deboer taking the Bama job and Jerod Mayo replacing Belichick. Good luck to them, it's never easy replacing a legend. Also, congrats to Michigan winning the National Championship. I was hoping Washington would pull it off but it is what it is. Also, is Jim Harbaugh staying at Michigan?
