Baseball to come back in May?
It's been nearly a month since the NBA suspended operations and a day later every other league/NCAA/minors followed suit. Since then, it's been a whole lotta nothing. Well except for the NFL offseason which is the only thing going on with offseason moves like the Houston Texans trading away Deandre Hopkins (their best receiver) to the Arizona Cardinals for David Johnson, a second-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, and a fourth-round pick in the 2021 Draft. They better hope that either David Johnson returns to his 2016 form or one of the picks they got turns into a star otherwise this is a bad trade. Tom Brady went to the Bucs where I am hoping he's got another season in him (whenever that will be). The NFL Draft will take place on time (April 23rd-25th) despite some calls to delay it but Commissioner Goodell would have none of all, even going on to threaten fines and/or suspension. The sports stations have been playing some of their original programming, classic games, among other things to add to their schedule including sports movies. ESPN has rushed the airing of the Last Dance (a 30 for 30 about the last season of the Chicago Bulls with Michael Jordan) to April 19th when it was originally supposed to air on June 2nd. There might be a post about the 30 for 30 coming soon. I know people are missing sports, entertainment, among other stuff like crazy. Here's a glimmer of hope. Major League Baseball is considering returning in May (honestly probably a June start is more likely). Their plan is to only play in Arizona at Chase Field and 10 other stadiums where teams play in Spring Training plus two other stadiums where college teams play. The plan is teams are going to stay at Phoenix Hotels and only leave when they leave to play their games. The games will have no fans and have players' social distance from each other in the stands instead of being in the dugout. Also, no home plate umpire, have the computer call balls and strikes. So there would be only three umpires (maybe two if they only have those who can cover first and third, just saying MLB). Also, MLB is considering seven-inning doubleheaders. They're taking their cues from the Korean Baseball League who are also aiming towards a May start and starting their spring training as early as week or so. I'll just say, I don't hate the idea but I don't like it either. I believe if MLB does this, it should be closer to June or whenever the cases go down or there's no more new cases. Maybe have the teams have another Spring Training in mid to late May. Also, Arizona (as of April 9th) has about 2,700 cases of the Coronavirus. So there's still danger there. Has yes players are spread out in the field but there's still going to be close contact like the batter and the catcher and when the batters get on base and the fielders try to get them out. Also, where will the base coaches be? Plus there are players with families. They're going to be by themselves in their hotel rooms while their families are at home. Then there's Arizona in the summer. The temperature gets to 110 degrees give or take. Most of those stadiums will there unbearably hot (Chase Field has a retractable roof). Don't give me wrong, I would like to see Baseball come back. I'm probably one of a few people (Millennials) that do like Baseball especially since there the Rays (helps there a local team) but I am not sure about this idea. Plus will the players wear masks? It probably depends on what's going to happen between now and then.
