30 for 30

My favorite documentaries have been for the most part 30 for 30 from ESPN. The 30 for 30 series was started in 2009 to celebrate ESPN's 30th anniversary and yet their still doing them and some spinoffs like the SEC Storied with the SEC Network and ESPN is about to turn 40 soon. It started with "King's Ransom" about the Wayne Gretzky trade to the Los Angeles Kings, Honestly, I wish they started with something else because the NHL is the fourth big sports league in this country but ESPN didn't ask for my opinion. I wonder what they're going to do with the upcoming ACC Network (ACC Storied? and what if it is will they do one for Deion Sanders since he played three sports for Florida State including playing in a doubleheader for baseball and in between those games ran in a leg in a track meet in a precursor of what happened in 1992). So far, no Tampa related 30 for 30 yet. Was "House of Steinbrenner" shot in Tampa during any part of the documentary? The closest was when former Buccaneers linebacker Keith McCants was featured in the "Broke" Doc where he and other pro athletes like Bernie Kosar, Andre Rison among others talked about why athletes go broke shortly after retiring. Also, the " This Magic Moment" talked about the Orlando Magic during the Shaq and Penny days. I wonder if 92 percent of Tampa would have said Shaq didn't deserve 115 million dollars the way Orlando did. I'm surprised ESPN hasn't done a 30 for 30 about the last day of the 2011 Major League Baseball season (Surprised it hasn't happened yet, let it Happen ESPN). Before I talk about the latest 30 for 30 about Deion Sanders playing two games in two different sports in a 24-hour span and suiting for a third game (didn't play), I'll go talk about some of mine favorite 30 for 30s.

Pony Excess (or Pony Exce$$): Where they talk about the SMU Football in the late 1970s to the mid-1980s where boosters paid players to come to SMU and They have a great stretch from 1981-1984 where they only lost six games and won three Southwestern Conference titles but they ended up with the "Death Penalty" where the program was barred from playing in the 1987 season and ended up missing the 1988 season. It was the school's call because they were permitted but only for six games and only play road games. I think it was a good choice to miss that 1988 season. It was kind of about greed so probably I what I like this 30 for 30. Also, if you're wondering the Southwestern Conference is no more possibly because of SMU getting the Death Penalty.

Survive and Advance: How many of Y'all know about the shot that fell short and put back by Lorenzo Charles for the winner? How many the road North Carolina State took to win the title? It was a hard road, they had to win the ACC tournament just to make it to the NCAA tournament. They had to beat two top five teams in North Carolina and Virginia in close games to win the title and make it the tournament. In the tournament they had to beat Pepperdine, UNLV, Utah, Virginia again, Georgia, and number one Houston who also had a 30 for 30 about the Phi Slama Jama teams during that time. Also, they talked about Head Coach Jim Valvano's fight with cancer, his 1992 ESPY which, and his final speech to his 1983 team in the 10-year anniversary celebration in NC State. Valvano's "Don't Give Up, Don't Ever Give Up" line, I believe his 1983 team embodied that line.

Believeland: This had to be redone because the Cavs won the NBA title in 2016 and it was aired before then. It talked about the Cleveland title drought the events that are painfully like the Drive, the Fumble, the Shot, OK you get the point. I think it should have been longer (after the Cavs won) more depth toward the championship season same with Jordan Rides the Bus another one I like. I would have like to hear about the financial impact in Chicago. OK probably wasn't that bad but I'm sure the Bulls took a hit without Jordan. I know they didn't win a title for two seasons even though Jordan returned halfway in the 1994-95 season. Also, I wonder if they would have been changed the ending again if the Indians won the 2016 World Series.

Now to the latest 30 for 30 about Deion of how he tried to play two sports on the same day for the same city he played for the Atlanta Falcons and Braves. Well, he did play both sports in a 24-hour span and suited up for a third game (in between Games 4 and 5 of the National League Championship Series Deion played an NFL game in 1992) but Manager Bobby Cox kept him on the bench and people criticize him in the media including Tim McCarver but I wonder if McCarver had an opportunity to play for both of the St. Louis Cardinals team (football Cardinals are now in Arizona but back when McCarver played baseball for over 20 years they played in St. Louis) would he played for both at the same time? OK Granted yes it happened during the baseball playoffs. It's one thing if both leagues were in the regular season and he did playoffs in baseball so couldn't completely blame his critics like McCarver and Jim Gray though again he, if could do what Deion did, would they? Deion did get McCarver back by dumping McCarver with water a few times during the Braves celebration when the beat the Pittsburgh Pirates going on to the World Series. Jim Gray called it legal assault. Really Jim? Have you seen a baseball game lately Jim? In a post-game interview when a player gets interviewed by the TV reporter, the player gets either pied in the face or Gatorade/Water Showers and sometimes the reporters are targeted as well either intentional or just in the line of sight and I haven't seen either of the reporters complain about that or even bill the team for their dry cleaning (which I would agree with, face it the reporters are wearing nice outfits and for them to get wet it would be nice if the team/guilty player to take care the dry cleaning bill or buy them a new outfit just saying). The Braves went on to lose the 1992 World Series 4 games to 2. Three of the games, The Braves lost in the last inning/extra innings. If the Braves won, there's a good chance Deion could have been the World Series MVP. Those contract talks with the Braves and Deion would have been interesting. After the 1992 season, the relationship between the Braves and Deion soured ending with Deion getting traded midway through the 1994 season. Deion is also the last player to be two sports at the same time and I don't think it's going to change anytime soon even with Kyler Murray (also I don't see Murray playing two sports unless he wants to move to receiver because I don't see Quarterbacks playing two sports because Quarterbacks need to be fully committed though he could play in the minors until training camp, just saying) because Front Office executive are stricter now than they were when Deion and Bo Jackson were playing. Personally, I don't blame Deion for doing what he did though unsure if I would play two sports on the same day/24 hour span. It should be pointed out that Cox, then Braves General Manager John Schuerholz, and McCarver refused to be interview for the 30 for 30. I wonder what the next 30 for 30 will be. Just hope they do one about the last day of the 2011 MLB Season soon.
